Telephony Glossary - Page 5

Hewlett Packard (HP) - A computer manufacturer that has developed a computer-specific API to provide mapping between some of its proprietary operating systems and ASAI. (See also ACT.)

Host - A mainframe or minicomputer that users can access via dumb terminals or with PCs running a terminal-emulation program.

Hot keys - A keyboard shortcut (one key or a combination, such as ALT or CTRL and a number or letter key) that executes an action within an application or opens an application.

I/O - Input/Output. Refers both to a computer CPU's ability to send and receive signals and to the peripherals that send and receive the signals, such as keyboard, mouse, screen, printer, modem, diskette drives, and file storage devices.

IBM - A computer manufacturer that has developed a computer-specific API to provide mapping between some of its proprietary operating systems and ASAI. (See also CallPath Services Architecture.)

ICR - See Intelligent CallRouter.

IIR - See Intelligent Information Router.

IMA - An ISV that has developed ASAI-compliant CTI applications, including EDGE.

Incoming Call Rules - A FastCall™ feature that allows the user to determine how to handle various types of incoming calls.

Independent software vendor - See ISV.

Independent Software Vendor (ISV) -

INFORMIX® - A popular SQL database application.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) - A set of standards for digitally encoding voice, data, and other signals over the same line. The standards are still under development.

Integrated Services Digital Network-Basic Rate Interface (ISDN BRI) - An ISDN line that provides two B channels for carrying voice and data at 64 kilobits per second and one D-channel for carrying information about the call at 16 kilobits a second.

Intelligent CallRouter - An ASAI-compliant CTI application from GeoTel that makes decisions for routing calls to and from geographically distributed Call Centers.

Intelligent Information Router (IIR) - A TSAPI-compliant CTI application from AnswerSoft that works with DEFINITY to route incoming calls to specific agents or VDNs based on ANI, ii digits, DNIS, call prompted information, or UUI.

Intelligent Link - Third-party link between computer and switch that carriers command and status information.

Intelligent Transfer - A feature of a CTI system whereby the host controls the simultaneous transfer of a telephone call and associated data between agents or between a VPU and an agent.

Interface - A common boundary between two systems or pieces of equipment.

International Standards Organization (ISO) -

InternetCMB - An ASAI-compliant application by Genesys based on its net.Vectoring technology. It allows users on an organization's Web page to click an icon and initiate a phone or video call to the organization's Call Center.

Intranet - Enterprise information network (LAN and WANS) technology blended with Internet technology, such as World Wide Web browsers.

IPX/SPX - The transport protocol Novell NetWare uses to shuttle information between network PCs and servers.

ISA, ISA slot - Industry Standard Architecture. The architecture of the PC expansion bus in the IBM PC, XT, AT, 386, and 486.

Isochronous - The term Isochronous comes from the Greek works "iso" for equal and "chronous" for time and has to do with the time-sensitive transmission of data. Voice and video transmission equipment need Isochronous transmission because this method enables the communication to happen in real time. Isochronous transmission delivers voice and video data without detracting from the natural style of conversation taking place between several parties.

Legacy systems - Usually mainframes and/or minicomputers with proprietary operating systems, typically old, for which off-the-shelf software may not be available. These systems frequently contain substantial data to which the organization needs to retain access. May require computer-specific APIs to enable CTI. (See also Host.)

Local Area Network (LAN) - Two or more computers, usually within the same building, that are connected by cable. LANs use a network operating system such as Novell NetWare or Windows NT and application software that allow their users to share hard disks, printers, files, and other peripherals.

Log Viewer - One of the four TAPI-compliant applications packaged with PassageWay™ Direct Connection. Log Viewer keeps a record of calls made and received through AT&T Call and AT&TBuzz, including person's name, account code, data and time, type of call (incoming, outgoing, unanswered), and telephone number.
